For the geek-ified (or someone who is not running a business) one can turn a spare PC (or PCI or NuBus Mac) with two network interfaces into a router platform using Linux, OpenBSD, or pick your BSD. There is even some specialized hardware (KnatBox) that has the two ethernets packaged on a small PC board.
BTW: The logs have show constant probing of port 135, 137, etc. for the past 3 years -- even though the WAN link is via dynamic DSL, and all the computers use MacOS (except for a little emulated Windows for phone configuration and an old version of QuickBooks for Windows). I think that the answer to a lot of problems would be to banish Microsoft networking in favor of FTP!

I never use Linksys routers anymore. I was hacked through a Linksys router with no port forwarding, cost me a fair amount of money...
I only swear by Netscreen firewall/routers now.
