The SonicWall firewall/router appliance does 90% of what a midrange Cisco does (stateful inspection, logging, port forwarding) at reasonable cost and a web interface. Even my SU (spousal unit) who runs the business and is more focused on other things can reset the WAN connection when DSL freezes. Sonicwall VPN is supposed to be feasible with few hassles. The spam blocking / site blocking subscriptions seem overpriced.

For the geek-ified (or someone who is not running a business) one can turn a spare PC (or PCI or NuBus Mac) with two network interfaces into a router platform using Linux, OpenBSD, or pick your BSD. There is even some specialized hardware (KnatBox) that has the two ethernets packaged on a small PC board.

BTW: The logs have show constant probing of port 135, 137, etc. for the past 3 years -- even though the WAN link is via dynamic DSL, and all the computers use MacOS (except for a little emulated Windows for phone configuration and an old version of QuickBooks for Windows). I think that the answer to a lot of problems would be to banish Microsoft networking in favor of FTP!

I never use Linksys routers anymore.
I was hacked through a Linksys router with no port forwarding, cost me a
fair amount of money...

I only swear by Netscreen firewall/routers now.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, Linksys is a privately held
company.
