And "ground start" ( a feature of trunks rather than "lines") require a momentary ground on one of the two wires of the pair from the C.O. to request dial tone, rather than the usual "loop start" line used by a single line phone or key system. I have been given to understand the ground start is unknown out side North America ( though I could be wrong ). I have never heard ground start ckts being used to thwart problems with lightning................ but who knows, I don't know everything, though I can't imagine why it should matter...........
