Zach's KR has an O-200 and had the old Delco pull type starter that's akin to
the 1950s Chevy foot starter. That type of starter has a sprag clutch to drive
the Bendix that that is around $650 to replace when it fails. I killed two of
them in my KR before I upgraded to a much lighter Sky-tec starter.
Unfortunately, when you do the upgrade you have to cut the starter pinion shaft
off inside the accessory case. That is a nasty job that fills your engine full
of abrasives in the process. Both the Sky-tec and B&C light weight starters
are fabulous replacements for the antique Delcos or even the more modern
Presto-lite key starters. Since his engine was already due for some major
work, and he had another engine that had already been converted for a different
starter, it was a good time to make the change.

Starters

Steve Bennett used Suburu starters on his engines . . . don't know how far
back. He considered them the best of the bunch. I can say I've never had a
moment's trouble with the one on my 2180. My earlier KR had a Revmaster & I
don't know what Joe uses. Anybody?
