I'm not using an iPad, I'm using an Android tablet, a "second generation" 2013 (or later) Google Nexus 7, to be exact. I chose that one because it's one of the brightest tablets out there (at least it was when I first researched this several years ago), and they can be bought off ebay all day long for under $100. Yes, I do run the iFly software on it, and have been using that since I had my own iFly GPS 720 several years ago. I still have it somewhere, if I haven't trashed it, because I too was having problems with touchscreen sensitivity, registration, and just plain failing to operate on occasion. That's when I ditched it. And if I remember correctly, the iFly has no internal battery, and when it loses 12V, it's gone, along with your route...bad news over congested airspace. Androids and other tablets will run for hours on a charge, but I keep mine powered by a $5 micro USB power supply off ebay. If power disappears for some reason, it just keeps on going.

And when that thing croaks, it goes back to the factory for a while. The nexus tablets are so cheap, I could just keep a spare on hand, and in fact, I now have two, one for 891JF, and one for 357CJ. The screens are not only very reliable on the Nexus (or probably any commercially available tablet), the sensitivity is always perfect and immediate with the ones I've used. And the iFly software (download able from their app) allows you do do things that I couldn't do on my old 720, like use two fingers to zoom in or pan, among other things.

The Ifly subscription is only something like $25 more per year to cover four "devices", in addition to the same $79.99 you'd be paying for the iFly 740 subscription, which is pretty cheap. This way, my phone is always my backup, with the third copy on it.

I tried iPads and was very disappointed. They are quick to overheat if left in direct sunlight, so must be shaded during the summertime. Several times I've stopped for fuel on the way to OSH or going to lunch somewhere, and when I get back in, no GPS! I've never had that happen with the Android. Yes, a fan on the back of the iPad would help that situation, but I have too many useless holes in my panel already.

I've already returned Joe's iFly to him, as he may use it on the plane he's finishing up.
