Air race E are trying to create an Electric Race formula for what were 0-200
powered Formula 1 Reno air racers. I'm part of a team working with Nottingham
University. There are about 6 teams around the world all working on this and no
one can do it yet. We can't do it yet either. It's proving virtually impossible.

The problem is battery density. We simply can't get enough batteries onboard
for 5 minutes of power sufficient to race at 200+ mph. You can float around in
a glider all day and power them, but as you increase the power, obviously the
battery drain increases.

Rolls Royce have spent millions in creating a plane that they hope is capable
of 300 MPH and it has only just got airborne after 10 years of development.

They use a 6,000 cell battery and were developing straighter battery cables
that deliver the electrons down the cable with less resistance, such is the
limitations of the power supply.

These people who believe we will soon all be going on holiday in Electric
powered airliners, well don't hold your breath...
