-I flew my first 70 hours with the Azusa drum brakes. I used a hand
brake lever 18 inches long, mounted to the left side of the fuselage.
The handle top was 15 inches above the pivot bolt, and the cable
mounting hole was 2 and 13/16 inches below the pivot bolt. No, they
would not hold up a full power runup. After I converted it to disc
brakes, I found that a full power runup would drag the wooden chocks
with the tires locked up , leaving black rubber streaks on the
concrete. This was all with an 1835 VW I built myself, and a Great
American 52 x 46 prop.
And for all you folks that think it is too sensitive in pitch : Make
your control stick as long as you can, without pinching your thumb
between the instrument panel and the top of the control stick. This
longer arm makes for more movement required for the same amount of
deflection of your control surfaces ( Aileron and Elevator). I let my
flight instructor (he was a double I ) fly it, and he said " It flies
like a mini fighter, and is so responsive". My take, is that after you
fly a KR2, flying a Cessna 150, is like wheeling a dump truck compared
to a sports car. Yes, I have driven both.
All said, my KR is a retractable tri gear, but they all fly the same
in the air, or so I am told.
