Hi John.
Yes, when you export a FAA registered aircraft you do surrender the
registration and airworthiness back to the FAA.
And Yes, before re-registering with the FAA it you would get that foreign
agency to release their "claim" of it.
And Yes again, the "slight of hand" you referenced is due to the fact that
the aircraft was never registered in New Zealand. As evidenced by
