At least steam gauges are somewhat versatile in that they mount in standard holes, which is why the one Larry's looking at fits in his panel without modification (once he decides what to swap out). Proprietary glass panels are all different sizes, often meaning rip out the panel and start over. Admittedly, you can pack a lot of instruments into a 7"x9" glass box, but when that box dies, you're not flying until you get it fixed. With steam gauges, they usually croak one at a time, and you can keep on flying. Honestly, my MGL iEFIS has such a goofy fluctuating kind of display for heading and altitude that I have a hard time even maintaining altitude and heading. So once I get airborne, I flip over to the "round gauge" theme and suddenly maintain altitude and heading a LOT BETTER! Jeff and Mike will be happy to hear this....
