At least steam gauges are somewhat versatile in that they mount in
standard holes, which is why the one Larry's looking at fits in his
panel without modification (once he decides what to swap out).
Proprietary glass panels are all different sizes, often meaning rip out
the panel and start over. Admittedly, you can pack a lot of instruments
into a 7"x9" glass box, but when that box dies, you're not flying until
you get it fixed. With steam gauges, they usually croak one at a time,
and you can keep on flying. Honestly, my MGL iEFIS has such a goofy
fluctuating kind of display for heading and altitude that I have a hard
time even maintaining altitude and heading. So once I get airborne, I
flip over to the "round gauge" theme and suddenly maintain altitude and
heading a LOT BETTER! Jeff and Mike will be happy to hear this....
