"How much will the Diehl gear legs deflect?"

I really am not trying to be a smart ass here but it depends on how bad your
landing is. In my particular case it was quite a lot. On my first first flight
my G meter recorded 2.4 during the "return to earth" portion of this flight. If
you would have asked me I would have said at least 5. It was so much that the
filler I used to streamline the gear legs all cracked and some of it broke off.
This has now been cleaned off, glassed in very light silk weave and lightly
sanded with no filler what-so-ever.

Because of this landing I have opened up the bottom of my wing so that I can
now inspect my landing gear bracket and its attachment to both the spar and the
leg. I now have a removable fairing for the inside and one for the outside of
this opening with built in fillets to smooth the airflow around the
intersection of the leg and the bottom of the wing. I don't really think I will
need them for my second first flight but if I do I can easily remove them to
inspect this area. The inside fairing fits right up against the gear leg since
it can't flex in that direction. I gave the outside fairing a 1/8" clearance
for flexing. This should be much more than enough because the flexing is going
to increase as you get further from the attachment bracket.

I have the standard Diehl main gear and my own nose leg design with his yoke
assembly. There was no apparent damage to the bottom of my stub wings but I bet
they flexed 4-5 inches. I wasn't sure before but I now have quite an
appreciation for the durability of this gear. From the spar bracket to the axle
no damage at all.

Hope this helps,
