Mike, I use the same type as for my wing gap covers, but yes it can take off some paint if pressed in to hard. Certainly need it at Oshkosh to keep the rain out of my KR for the week. I use it on the canopy frame at a couple spots where the water has been know to leak in on the sides. I do have weather seals on the front and sides that stop 90%. I also use a piece at the tail gap at the elevator.
I used a tarp a couple times but it can flap around and cause paint issues as well if not well fitted for the plane.
