Hi All, I fly from 5673 MSL. I often drive to 11,000 MSL. I have seen many people have issues at that altitude. If you get a mountain checkout they will provide you with some good information about flying at altitude. FAA requirements aside; at one point I was suggested to just use my oxygen for a 5 hour flight (most of the time 12,500) to KGUE in AZ, and I would feel a lot better.
Look for lost awareness and blue under your fingernails. It is very hard for a pilot to notice oxygen issues. I read an NTSB report of a pilot who passed out due to the O2 tank not functioning properly. Don’t forget your to monitor fuel mixture!
