"maximum width that you can be without a permit is 8' 6""

I believe this is true in Texas too but does vary from state to state. However,
I will say that when you are transporting a plane down the highway it is
amazing at what people notice. I moved my Diehl casting outside of the
propeller slip stream to avoid the energize flow of that region. To compensate
for that I laminated a 1/4" piece of plywood to the aft side of my main spar
from bracket to bracket. No real engineering, I just thought the additional
sheer web should be adequate. This was before I saw the spar test that Mark
mentioned. If I had seen that I would never have added the plywood.
Anyway the result was that my tires will no longer fit on my goose neck trailer
so I had to make special ramps to get the airplane on the trailer. The ramps
that were attached to the trailer had to be removed because they interfered
with the new ones. No big deal, pull a cotter pin, pull the one inch steel pin
for each ramp and they are off. What never crossed my mind was that the trailer
license plate was mounted to the bottom of one of those ramps so that when it
gets flipped up for transport you can see the plate. Long story short, not only
was I over width, I didn't have a tag on my trailer at all! I got passed by a
State Trooper and a local Police Officer on the way to the airport and neither
one ever slowed down. I am not suggesting you do this but if you do you might
just get away with it.
