I didn't know him very well, but had several great conversations with George on the phone about his Lycoming installation(s). I spoke with him the last time just a week before the incident and had purchased a few items from him for my O-290 installation. According to the NTSB report CEN12FA638: George reported to the tower that he suspected carburetor icing prior to returning to land. "Carburetor icing probability chart information was reviewed corresponding to the reported weather conditions at the time of the accident flight. According to the chart, the airplane was operated within the range (Temperature 12 degrees Celsius and Dew Point 4 degrees Celsius) of "serious" carburetor icing at any power setting." Considering the cooler temperatures here in Alaska, carb heat will be a must! And a 180 to land after climbout will be at the bottom of the checklist, last resort.
