The statistics on the safety record of homebuilts are somewhat misleading. According to studies by Ron Wanttaja in Kitplanes Magazine, the safety record is much worse during the first few hours of flight. After that it decreases and eventually the safety record is similar to that of certified planes.

I was thinking of Ron during Jeff's presentation, and Ron would certainly be a good head start, if not one-stop shopping! I'll also echo kudos to Rob and EAA Chapter 91 for a fantastic effort! Rob's also the guy who coined the "hostless Gathering", which is already tentatively scheduled for the second week of September at KMVN. And congratulations to Mike Sylvester on his first long cross-country in his newly minted KR2S. That was especially tough flying, because he had to chase me all over the sky, both vertically and horizontally. The hazy horizon made it difficult to maintain either heading or altitude. I should have a bunch of photos posted by the weekend, and will send a link when I get it finished. I'll add some commentary for those who couldn't make it this time.
