I used the accordian types (re-used the old ones actually) when I rebuilt my heads. Steve Bennett recommended using high-temp silicone and whether it's that or whether I just was careful enough to be lucky, they've never leaked. In fact, those comments regarding the inevitability of oil leaks on VW's are unwarranted imho. I've occasionally seen a tiny amount which I suspect comes from the rear crank seal but that is occasional, not constant. I use synthetic Valvoline 20-50 from NAPA which is what Steve was using when I bought the plane from him and I've stuck with it.
