I still cannot verify the source, my 2012 GPASC "Type 1 VW Engine Assembly Manual" says: "Great Plains engine can not be used with a metal or composite propeller when driven off the pulley end" which is also repeated in the 2016 version, except the wording is "metal or composite propellers are not allowed", below the "Front Drive" table.
I feel sure the origin of this determination can be found in the old newsletters at http://www.krnet.org/newsletter/ .
