You don't need a "second safety precaution".  The nails will only add 
unnecessary weight.  You won't get a stronger joint than a 100% good 
glue joint.  I have unfortunately seen several KR's that have crashed 
and they don't come apart at the glue joints.  The wood structure 
itself will fail before the glue joints come apart.  Don't second 
guess the current plans.  You don't need a better mouse trap.
