Sunday morning March 24, 2012 I arose from sleep at the crack of dawn. Looking
outside I could see a hint of fog on this cool crisp spring morning. A quick
shower and a coffee and I was off to the airport. I listened to AWOS via cell
phone during my long 1.5 mile drive to the airport. Weather was calling winds
at 7 straight down 03 with clouds broken at 800'. Looking up at the sky it
looked like long rows of cotton with plenty of blue skies in between. I pulled
my KR Vair from the hanger into the glistening sun for her wake up call. Once
she was all ready to go, the Vair fired right up and it was off to 03 with
anticipation of the morning flight. The run up was as normal as it has been
ever since I had the experts build my engine for me three winters ago. Yep this
will be my third flying season on this engine with not so much as a hick up.
Anyway, I called the takeoff and firewalled her. We were airborne in the cool
air in a matter of seconds and she climbed to the bottom of the clouds at 800'
AGL in just another few seconds. I turned towards blue skies between the row of
of floating cotton and continued to climb to 2500' where we were on top. Oh my
God, what a sight.! Row after row of of endless fluffy clouds that simply took
my breath away and made me glad I was a pilot. I could not phantom why there
were no other pilots in the skies over Stevens Point. The air was the smoothest
I had ever experienced. If only I had had a glass of Champaign sitting on the
dash. That would have made for the coolest photo ever. I did grab my phone and
took a video. I will get my kids to post it on You Tube later for you to enjoy.
I never did go any higher than a few hundred feet over the clouds as I just
could not see any reason to leave such a beautiful scene. Staying low over the
clouds really gives you an appreciation of just how fast you are moving across
the sky. It was simply exhilarating. After about an hour, I was running low on
fuel so I had to return to reality. Up to the pumps, full of fuel and ready to
go again later today.
THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
