Andy,

My guess is that you flew with another guy in the plane both times.  That 
puts the CG aft, and the plane is at its worst behavior. They are a joy to 
fly solo, but a little twitchy with a passenger, and the climb is  a little 
disappointing with a passenger, even with a big Corvair.  And as others have 
said, the CG on both planes was probably close to the aft CG range.  They're 
really not that hard to fly.  I landed mine today in an 80 degree 20 knot 
crosswind gusting to 26 knots...
