Phil,

Do you have any pictures. A visual would help a lot. I am beginning to think
that Dan Heaths advice is probably going to be the fix. "Put in a big Rev
master
oil cooler mount it below the engine and be done with it."

Anyone who might have some installation pics of a 2180 or like would really
help. I also got some good ideas from (JL) Jeff Lange yesterday on here and he
sent some links about this exact thing from the Soneri group and it appears
that
group is deep in discussions on this very same thing. Same engine, different
plane but all the same. They are having a lot of discussion on oil pumps and
their effect on temps. The idea of cross sharing information from other
aircraft
groups is a great idea. So at least I have some comfort in knowing I am not the
only one who has struggled with oil temp problems for some time.

Last weekend M. Warner and I saw a new two place composite plane that
incorporates an updraft cooling design. The cowling air intakes are on the
lower
cowl and the upper cowl has those hot rod style slotted vents for exit air just
in front of the windshield. Not sure what engine it had in it but I am guessing
something like a Rotax 4 cyl 4 cycle like a 914 or something. I think the plane
was a Spirit Stinger maybe.

I would love to see this subject in an intense forum at the next gathering. In
fact, I think we all should start thinking of some of the biggest issues we
have
had and start some sort of list of the top 10 problems or struggles and make
them a priority to have forums on them at the next gathering. We could then
seek
out subject matter experts and use actual airplanes and structures to hold
visual forums. I know, we have probably done this in the past but I am just
thinking out loud here. I would be willing to contribute by doing one on paint
and finish, body work and wet sanding and such. Hopefully by the next gathering
I will have my oil temp issues resolved and I would be more than happy to share
that experience. How about you, Dan Heath? Where is Troy Pettiway? I would love
to see him do one on aerodynamic clean up. I think we all want our planes to be
as efficient as possible. I mean didn't we choose a KR for speed and best bang
for the buck.

I may have brought this forum stuff up a bit premature, considering how far we
are from the next gathering. But! can you really start planing to early?

Subject: Re: KR> high oil temps on VW 2180 follow up

In the first test we bent the lip (about 30-35 degrees) up toward the lower
fuse effectively decreasing the exit opening of the lower cowl.

Jeff.
When I fitted my type 4 VW I made a aluminum cover to route air over the
finned sump.
I have never had to use it, as my oil temp is around 90 to 100 C. (212f)

Something you could think about.
Good luck.
