The first time I raced in the Cup race I was so nervous and flustered that I forgot to latch my canopy. It stayed closed because of its shape, until... I had just done a timing pass at 50agl indicating 210mph. I came around to land for fuel and put it in a hard slip on short final and all hell broke loose. It came open at about 100'agl, knocked my headphones off and stayed on the airplane. The first thing I could see (because of the wind if my face) was that I was going to impact the the berm at the end of the runway. I pulled up, slowed down and landed. I hate to think of how dead I would have been if it had come open durning the timing pass... We all get into the hurry up mode at times, but its so dangerous. Thanks for sharing your story, it could save someone's life!
