Eric,

Are you talking about a VW engine?  What kind of plugs, depth of the
threaded area?  The only place I have seen a problem, is on the VW when the
plug treaded area has been bored out, to allow for the 1/2" reach of the
aircraft plugs for the magneto.  It is not uncommon for these to get blown
out.

However, if you have genuine VW heads, they have plenty of meat, where the
plug goes, either one.  And if you use auto plugs with a 3/4" reach, or can
find aircraft plugs with a 3/4" reach that you are willing to pay for, you
should not need any type of insert.
