I am convinced that EMPI is the reason that I have junked 2 sets of heads.
The ones that I put on, on this last re-build, are genuine VW.  Well, as
genuine as you can get these days.  I think the EMPI are OK, on the heads
with the stock size valves, but are not, on the 2180 with the oversize
valves.

My Great Plains 2180 has 774 hours on the bottom and 484 hours on the top
and has proven very durable, smooth and completely free of hassles.  No
leaks.  No problems. A valve spring recently broke.  Two actually, it
turns out.  Pretty rare event.  I'm replacing with German springs - the
ones that broke were without doubt Chinese.  EMPI is Chinese
