Todd,
I currently have two handheld transceivers.

The first is a Bendix King KX-99 which I bought from a former KR builder
about six years ago. I flew with it many years until last summer when it
faulted. Had it repaired this summer and now it is like new again.
Anyway, while at Oshkosh this summer, I purchased an ICOM A24 and have had
no regrets since doing so. The radio comes with all the accessories, headset
adapter, charger, case, belt clip, antenna and wrist strap. I did purchase
separately a 12V charger adapter so I could run external power direct from
my plane's 12V system. The radio is crystal clear. It picks up no no engine
noise. I have clearly talked with aircraft 90 miles away and have clearly
received transmissions from aircraft reporting positions farther away than
that. The IC A24 has navigation. A huge plus is when you are transmitting
using a headset, it has side tone which allows you to hear your transmission
through your headset. The IC A24 is a sweet transceiver and you will be
pleased if you buy one. Also, there is a factory $40 rebate on it right now.

Subject: KR> hand helds

I'm sure this thread has gone around before, but I wasn't paying attention.
I am considering purchasing a handheld as a backup to carry in my KR2, and
so far have read about 2 that look like they would do the trick and are
affordable at around $240 or so each.
They are the Icom IC-A24 NAV-COM Transceiver and the Vertex VXA-300 Pilot
III NAV-COM Transceiver.
I would like to hear comments from anyone using either of these currently,
and will welcome both good and bad comments about either, if anyone has
any. If no one has any bad stuff to say about either of them, I am leaning
toward the Vertex. If there is something way better and cheaper out there
than either of these two, let me know please.

Thanks,

Todd Thelin
