Here is a paste of two posts I made on the Short wing piper site a few weeks
ago. The short summary is that it didn't work at 350 degrees, but worked
perfectly at 550. I assume that it will be the same on the Matco. It has
been a while since I had a Matco apart, but I think you can also split the
wheel and just press the bearing out with an arbo press.

removing tail wheel bearing race

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

I need to replace the bearing races on my Scott tailwheel. The race presses
into the hub and the inside hole of the race is barely larger than the hole
that goes the rest of the way through the hub. On top of that the hole in
the hub is tapered so anything that you use to try to press the race out is
smaller than the inside hole of the race when it just fits through the hole
in the hub. There is also next to nothing to grip on the race with any kind
of gear puller.

I tried wetting a paper towel and stuffing it in a new race then putting it
in the freezer while I had the wheel in the oven at 350. I took the wheel
out and put the frozen paper towel which was now a block of ice the shape
and size of the inside of the race in the race and that did not do the
trick. I am going to try again at 500 degrees and see if that works. Any
other suggestions?

I guess that I asked the question a little too early. Seems that at 550
degrees you can just grab the hub with an oven mit and slam it upside down
on a piece of wood a few times and the bearing falls right out.

I have the new races in the freezer now and the hubs with the races removed
back in the oven and I should be able to just tap the new races right in. If
they don't quite make it in all the way an arbor press will easily put them
in.

I hope that I save someone else the trouble of figuring out how to get the
races out sometime.

Subject: KR> Removing Matco Bearings

G’day all.

The time has come for me to remove the supplied 5/8” bearings in my
Matco wheels and replace them with ¾” bearings to match the axle I
purchased.

However, the bearings in the Matco hub are (or appear to be) an
interference fit. And a tight one at that. I’ve tried heating the hub in
the oven to no effect, and was wondering if anyone can suggest a better
way to remove these bearings. I need to get the plane on its own wheels
so I can take it to work to rebuild the wings…

The archives didn’t reveal any info about removing the Matco bearings,
though the Clevelands were covered, but, unfortunately these notes
weren’t of much help…

Many thanks,
Rob.
