As you obviously have the rear spar exposed at the moment, why not laminate
a 3/16 length of spruce to it and then continue on from there?  I know that
I wouldn't feel comfortable using any less timber than called for with such
a critical component as a wing spar.  It would always be in the back of my
mind every time I went flying.
