In cloth covering, 45 biased tape is used around edges for the simple
reason that it has more longitudinal give, for example leading edge tape.
If you use straight tape around a curved object, the edges pucker up,
whereas bias tape can be pulled taught around the curve.

Fibre cloth is a lot more compliant, as it is far looser weave, so there
is somewhat less benefit from using it biased.

There is another advantage, where you are laying up to an edge, if the
fibres are parallel to the edge, you end up with a lot of fraying, and
hence a weaker edge. biased cloth frays far less.

It is also easier to wrap bias cloth over a 90deg edge, as any individual
fibre is only bent through 45degs rather than 90 degs, this gives a neater
edge with less tendency for the cloth to lift itself away from the
underlying surface
