If you use regular bi-directional weave cloth, run at 45 degrees to whatever, both length and width stresses have to cross every fiber. When the cloth is laid "normal", however, length and width stresses only have to cross half the fibers. Whether this is a problem in any given location depends on the stresses involved; sometimes a light cloth is used more as a cover than as a strength member. -- Regards, RonB
