I just took a look at Rand Robinson "Drawing A" of the fuselage and checked
the dimension changes I made and marked on that drawing. I mistakenly said
that I added one inch to each bay. In reality, I only added a total of two
inches. The changes I made were to increase the distance from A to B to 8.25
inches and increased the distance from B to C to 9 inches. Like Langford
just stated in his post, it is not a simple matter. I have a heavy plane. It
is 771 lbs empty and my turtle deck is heavy. I don't know how heavy it is
but just by looking at it, you can tell it is heavy. I have a lead
counterbalance weight in the tail for the elevator. I have a larger
horizontal and vertical than stock. I also am a heavy pilot which all
together gives me the ballast I need for the added two inches in front of
the mail spar. There is only 3/8 of an inch between my starter nose and the
firewall so my engine is as close to the firewall as possible. When I did my
weight and balance in November 2004 for the FAA inspection, I weighed 246
lbs and that put my CG 2.2 inches aft of the forward limit with 20 gallons
of fuel in the wings and the CG moves forward one inch with tanks empty.
Now, take Langford's weight of 140 lbs and put him in my plane and the CG is
1/2 inch aft of the forward limit with 20 gallons of fuel in the wing tanks
and with the tanks empty it would be 7/10th of an inch forward of the
forward CG limit. Therefore, if Langford were the owner/pilot of N886MJ, he
would need aft ballast to move the CG back for safe flight. Yep, I got
lucky.
