This morning I flew up to Waupaca, WI (KPCZ) to see Pete's Corvair powered
KR-2S make it's second flight. First let me tell you Pete's KR is sweet. It is
a very clean plane with some very nice lines. It looks fast just sitting still.
The first words out of my mouth were..."Wow, I am impressed". And I was very
impressed.I feel sorry for the judges at this years KR Gathering because there
will be a lot of contenders for awards and Pete's will be one of them. Being
Pete's only second flight, he opted for me to stay on the ground so he could
fly in close proximity of the airport without having to worry where I was, so I
watched him from the ground. His plane was a beauty to watch fly and the engine
could not have sounded any sweeter. BTW, he opened the air escape area on the
bottom of his cowl and that lowered his oil temps down to 235° which was much
cooler than his first flight. Pete reported at level flight and 2950 rpm as he
crossed the airport at about 2700' he was indicating 150 MPH. Not too shabby.
That was indicated not true airspeed. Another fast KR has been born. Pete and I
are planning to fly together to the Gathering. I guess I will have to ask him
to fly slow so he will not leave me in his wake. Pete still needs to get his
approach speed down so he doesn't use up all 5000' of runway landing but that
will come with practice. Photos will be posted soon as I am making Pete a web
page. I will let everyone know when it is done. GREAT JOB PETE.
