I am glad that it concerns you. It should concern all of us. This new ordinance is known by me and most likely also our city council as "The Brian Kraut Can No Longer Build Planes at His House Bill". Surprising to see that it has made it out to the entire aviation community already and I am hearing it here because, you guessed it, I am the EAA 193 chapter member that made this startling announcement, I am the thorn in the side of the Jacksonville City Council that they wrote this for, and I am the first one to have received a citation on this new law.
I won't go into all of the gory details right now because I had planned on making a web site that will include the new law, how it got passed without anyone in the aviation community knowing about it, what all of the implications are, and what we can do about it. A lot of you who have known me for a while have alreay heard my stories of the battles I have had with our city over the past year and a half. I have been warned and ticketed about eight times and I have won this battle in court three times already. I have spent about three thousand dollars so far defending my rights and the rights of other homebuilders and I thought it was finally over. Now that the city has exhausted all of their efforts unsuccessfully trying to stretch their existing laws and spending thousands of dollars of taxpayers money they have apparently decided to just rewrite the laws to get me. I will not stand for it and they will not win this. This law sets a very bad precedent and it must be squashed now. The three lawyers I have spoken to so far are estimating that it will take from five to ten thousand dollars to get this done. I have already spoken to the governent relations people at both EAA and AOPA. They are curretly reviewing this to see if it is something that will be able to help me with. I will keep all of you posted. I expect to have the web site up in a few days and will post the address ad would certainly appreciate all of you spreading the word. I really did not plan on taking up a bunch of bandwith, but this issue has me pretty fired up. I will try to keep my comments and rants on the web site as soon as I have it up.
