Cost and availability are about the same, so maybe ease of working with it?  
One big factor that brought it into common usage on homebuilts was that it 
can be hotwired without generating toxic fumes like urethane foam, but there 
isn't much hotwiring on KRs.  Of course the original KRs used urethane foam 
and the only squawk I've heard about it is that it is somewhat delicate.  
After you carefully sand a shape out of a block of urethane foam it's easy 
to ding it.  Polystyrene is a little less delicate that way.
