I think the answer is "whatever gap there ends up being after you build and install the hinges shown in the plans". Having said that, there's no reason not to fair the gap in like I did at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/kht.html (next to last photo). There are lots of details left out of the plans that you don't ever get unless you buy RR's premade parts, but I don't think this is an example of that.
