I tried that, straight out of Tony Bengelis' book, but the only springs I 
could find were indeed "very tightly wound", and I couldn't begin to stretch 
them out without the mechanical advantage of a screen door working for me. 
That's why I finally spent a few minutes and made my own.  Obviously, your 
mileage has varied!
