There are many airplanes flying with a similar setup, including mine.
My only suggestion would be to use a smaller, tighter wound
spring to give better contact with the exhaust and more surface
area to transfer the heat.  A "screen door spring" from the hardware
store works good if you stretch it out a bit.  It has a rather small
double loop attach at each end.  I used heavy safety wire through
those loops to secure the ends. Stretch the spring to approx 150
percent of its original size or there about.  You can tell by looking
when it's right.  You can put several layers of spring on top of
each other if you have the room and it looks like you do.
