Like Jeff, I have flown this part of the country from time to time in a C182RG with much altitude potential and have found it challenging to say the least. Summer winds and turbulence need to be respected. One thing I'm sure you already know if your exposed to SDL early in the morning is the very heavy kerosene burning traffic every day. You will be mixing it up with some very professional pilots and ATC controllers. One route that I might suggest would be Snowflake to Payson then the Tonto valley over Lake Roosevelt to the dam then down the gorge over the Salt river to Fountain Hills and then call into SDL from the east.
