It prevents the fuselage from twisting, adds torsional strength.

I desinged my own gear which is taller. Send an email and I can send a jpeg
photo.

I used 1.8 oz. dacron on my wood which is tacked on with fabric cement (poly
tack) around the edges and the fabric is heated with an iron to taughten it
up. Then I used polybrush to seal it. That protects the bare wood.
