I keep a small axe inside my KR2 for the same purpose. It also serves as a hammer when I pitch some pegs for the tie-downs. Which happened often, because I don't have a starter motor. So, when I was on my own, I tied down the tail before I started.

My brother was showing me his knife collection last week and came to one knife and said this is what many firefighters and rescue personnel use. When I checked it out I decided this would make a good break out tool so he gave it to me. Check it out on ebay item no. 7161343120 It seems to have a strong enough blade to punch through a canopy or even the plywood. the blade also has serrations for cutting seatbelts and is easy one hand operation. The handle also has a hole which could be used to attached to the airplane in an area where you can reach it and will not go flying away in a crash.
