Hello KRNet,

I removed the rudder from my KR1 today and noticed that the hinges did not
look so well and need to be replaced, the hinges appear to be home-made by the
previous owner. I removed the hinges by unscrewing the bolts in the middle of
them and they came right off. I was able to run the bolts back into the holes
and they screwed back in. I am wondering what is back there? Is it a back plate
that is threaded that the bolts are going into or just nuts and washers? Do I
need to replace the back plates as well when I replace the hinges? I would
prefer not to cut any more holes in the plane than I have to. These hinges look
pretty simple and I could make some new ones from steel very easy; is this a
good idea? It would be stronger than aluminum. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you,
Steve Henderson
