Mark's idea to put in the handheld GPS was a very good one. I made sure on
my first flight that I had mine mounted where I could see it and working
correctly. It would not be fun at all on your first flight in a plane that
you are not familiar with to not have an airspeed indicator. GPS may not be
yor exact airspeed, but landing for the first time with no speed reference
at all would be a real pucker event. You could try to get some idea of your
stall speed at altitude, but everything looks different close to the ground.

I can tell you that I was pretty nervous that something was going to happen
to that plane, and therefore to Troy. The canopy latches had me worried,
and there are so many things different about this plane from any other that
you just have no idea what to expect. I suggesting waiting until another
day several times, but said "no problem, I'm gonna fly it", and he did!

I'm sure glad he did though, because now I know that all I have to worry
about is my flying abilities, not the airplane's flying abilities. That
will make me nervous enough, but to worry about "what if it starts
overheating on climbout and I have to land it immediately with no chance for
a go-around" and that sort of thing would be an overload for me...especially
with no airspeed indicator or VSI.

I'm glad he did it, and I owe him a lot for it...
