Don't forget, most laminates (such as plywood) are
stronger as compared to a solid peice of wood the same
thickness because of the different grain orientations.

But indeed.. just cutting up a 2x4 and gluing it back
together the same way it was cut will in fact make it
stronger.  At least in that one direction... The
layers and glue interactions change the way the fibers
handle the stresses.  

I'm sure there is a website all about it out there
somewhere ;-)
