In 1998 there was actually a tri-gear, twin 2180 VW, 2-place KR designed and constructed by a group formerly known as the Area 51 Engineers. It was called the KR-2T "Tango", as in "it takes two to Tango". A schematic is shown at http://www.flysquirrel.net/KR/Tango01.JPG . Performance wasn't too bad... it cruised at something just shy of 180 MPH.
