It is certainly more likely to damage the crank with something other than a wooden prop, but a wood prop certainly can damage the crank. When I bought my KR I heard that one of te previous owners had a prop strike with a wood prop so I had it magnafluxed and they said they found the biggest crack through the keyway that they ever saw.
