Another good way to set rivets when they are near an edge is with a vise. I
use my milling machine vise that has hardened smooth jaws that are perfectly
parallel. If you are using a standard bench vise with rough jaws you need
to get some flat steel bar stock on the jaws.

Mark, I'll not address the thickness for you to use as Scott has posted a
very extensive analysis of the various qualities of each. I will however
post this on the net, instead of as a private email. Solid rivets can be
set using a piece of flat stock steel and hammer. Hinges on my current
project or countersunk to accept the skin dimple then attached using AN3
rivets, which are 5/32. Very, very easy to set. There is a saying, "your
worst rivet is 90% as strong as your best". Go ahead and whack them with a
hammer.

Mark, when you make your final determination, and I recommend thinner and
use stiffiners, measure the brake and hinge configuration, let me know and
I'll send you the proper size rivets.
