I didn't widen my firewall because I wanted to retain the option of using the RR cowling. I don't need the room for the Corvair engine, but some more real estate to hang things on would have been nice. And since I made my own cowling anyway, it would have been just as easy. I'd say it's entirely optional. When seen from above, the fuselage/cowling lines on mine worked out just fine.
