A test you can try that will help you troubleshoot the alternator is as 
follows.
If you start with a fully charged battery and connect a positive wire from 
the battery directly to the Field side of the alternator, the alternator should 
output around 15 to 17 unregulated volts.  If this is true, then the 
alternator is OK and the problem is in the regulator or some other part.
