I can't point to a specific reference for this "opinion", but I remember
reading that they do help at speeds over 400 mph, so for our planes, they
are probably not worth the trouble unless you want something that looks
cool.  The faster you go, the more they help, which is why airliners are now
sporting them.  Willy Willson told me at the last Gathering that British
Airways had retrofitted them to their entire fleet of 747's (maybe all
types, dunno), so at 600 mph, they obviously pay for themselves.
Contradicting information is welcome, but that's all I've heard.
