The one thing I haven't heard mentioned is what happens if the engine quits in flight. Unless you have really low compression and have lots of altitude, you won't get it running again by going into a dive, thanks to the short prop. I've killed my engine in flight by accidently pulling the mixture all the way out, mistaking it for the throttle. I was climbing out on crosswind at the time, low altitude, and fortunately I had a starter that fired right up. Troy Petteway had a VW without a starter. It quit on him in flight, and his only alternative was a curvy mountain back road to land on...he tore his plane up a bit. When he rebuilt it, the engine had a starter on it...
