Joe Norris of Sonex described the starting procedure he used with his Sonerai which to the best of my recollection went something like this: Stand in front of the wing, right hand inside the cockpit on the throttle. Reach forward with left hand and flip the prop. Hand on the throttle to close it immediately if necessary. The rotating mass of the VW is much less than that of an aircraft engine so a one handed flip was all his VW needed. Maybe higher compression would need a more energetic spin.
