Lucky Larry.

Tires are able to withstand stress much better at rated pressure and they
also run cooler. As always, heat isn't a good thing. Not an issue with
our KR's I would guess. I also drive heavy cars and always run tires at
the max rated pressure - 42 on the Olds.

With the plane, I can tell when I pull the plane out of the hangar
whether the tires are low, also just by looking. If I suspect anything
beyond a couple pounds low I'll put a gauge on them and top them off.
I've had some that called for 30 and others that call for 50 or 55.
Yes, they'll wear faster in the center by not running them a little low.
I run my back tire on the bike about 7 lbs. low to get more even wear so
I understand the concept.

On the KR I use cheapo tires (currently 2-ply Cheng Shins - can you
believe they even make a 2 ply Cheng Shin?) and keep them full and strong
since I doubt there's much of a margin with these guys. I have a better
(stronger) set of tires to put on once these current ones start showing
through the tread. I keep the new ones - along with new tubes - in the
back of the plane where they help support my baggage compartment. I used
to keep my spares in the hangar but finally asked me what good are they
in the hangar if I have a blowout in Wyoming? Just try and find a
4.10x3.50x5 when you need it the most.

Cheng Shins are great, even the really cheap ones like I've got
currently. Normally they are at least a 4-ply rating and have never let
me down. Don't EVER buy any tires that say TON-KEEP on the side. I
bought them at Spruce and had a blowout that could have been a real
disaster if it had happened at a different time and place. I finally
took my blown-out TON-KEEP with about 15 landings on it up to Spruce and
showed them what they were selling. Hopefully they don't sell them
anymore.
